Hello Everybody,
Glad you found The Shades Writer. This site exists for nothing more than to bring writers together, share information, and help you feel just a little less alone in the world.
Your comments and questions are always welcome.
You may also visit me on my new author’s site: RitaHubbard.com. There, I will post news and historical articles for the history-lover in you.
I love hearing from you. Feel free to leave a comment for me.
All best wishes,
Rita Lorraine Hubbard

MY FIRST MOVIE SCRIPT

AN ENTREPRENEUR’S HEART (TM)
Back in September, 2008 I was notified about a film competition that challenged writers to tell an entrepreneur’s story in 5 minutes. I accepted that challenge, and together with rising filmmaker Adrienne Moss (who also happens to be a good friend), I wrote and co-produced the film, An Entrepreneur’s Heart. Be sure to check it out!
MY NEW BOOK IS HERE!
Here it is everybody…my baby that I ”carried” for over four years! The title is, African Americans of Chattanooga: A History of Unsung Heroes, and it is listed on my publisher’s website, The History Press at $19.99 without tax. It can also be ordered at Barnes and Noble Bookstores, and at Amazon.com. As soon as it is possible, I’ll make it available for purchase from this website.
DID YOU KNOW that Chattanooga is the home of the first African American lawyer to ever argue before the Supreme Court?
DID YOU KNOW that this same African American lawyer won the first stay-of-execution for an African American client?
DID YOU KNOW that this same African American lawyer was the first African American ever assigned as lead counsel by the Supreme Court? Unfortunately, he would never get to assume that lead role and argue his case…but you’ll have to buy the book to find out why.
This is an important, one-of-a-kind historical, and I do hope you’ll purchase a copy for your historical/research library.
Here is a photo of the Sidewalk Marquee on the February 8, 2008 Rockpoint Booksigning.
Here I am on February 13, 2008 on the WGOW Talk Radio Show with Jeff Styles. I had a wonderful time!
This is a February, 2008 newspaper article in which my book received a raving review from Ms. Adera Causey of The Hunter Museum of Art. Hunter Museum is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in Chattanooga, and it is no small matter when one of its renown staff members writes a favorable review. Thank you, Adera. You’ve given me the memory of a lifetime!
Below, I have donated a book to a young mother and her three daughters. I’m so excited that I have something to offer our children. May the book inspire you and your offspring to be all you can be!

Donating for a Great Cause
Here I am in February, 2008 at the beautiful Chickamauga Battlefield. The wonderful staff sponsored a delightful booksigning where I met fans and well-wishers.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!
I hope everyone is having a wonderful and restful holiday. Also, I’m writing to offer some words of encouragement as you exercise your gift of writing.
1. Make a writing schedule and stick to it.
2. Finish what you start.
3. Edit what you finish.
4. Have courage, and exchange your manuscript for a fresh perspective.
5. Have faith that you’re not wasting your time. You have the gift of writing, or you wouldn’t be doing this in the first place. Have faith, and keep working with your gift.
5. Send your work out! If you never send it out, you might as well never have written it at all.
I hope these words will encourage you in some way, and inspire you to keep moving toward the goal of getting published.
Best wishes and happy writing!
Rita

My friend put me on to this site today and I just thought I would browse to see what some other writers are doing and ran across your site. Great site! I am a new writer my book Lily in the Valley will be out soon its a inspirational book that include some of my poems and journal writings. This was definately something God wanted me to put out its about my walk and journey with him during my trials. Im looking to do an inspirational site that will have some of my writings as well as some of my friends that write or have a inspiring word for other women thats in or coming out of there valley. I will have to sit down and get things up and rolling on my site and get familiar with this site. Yours is truly awesome and very informative.

I have just found your site and it is of interest, I am very familiar with submissions to all of the smaller presses and the writing life is a difficult one. Tonight I logged on to find a new wordpress.com format which I do not care for as the older system. But I will place you in my personal site files if I decide to move elsewhere. As a long time user maybe you could post your opinion as to how you like the new system?

Shadeswriter (Rita) I hope you return after your spirit has renewed its strength. I enjoyed your posts and have you still in my favorites to peruse, but had not looked over it to notice how long it had been since I had seen a post from you. Funny but I think Spring & Summer 2008 was bad for many folks (myself included). My head wasn’t here much in the virtual world during that time. I have many stories to tell but haven’t written them yet — however reading your posts had made me think I Could jump in anytime with all your lists of places to enter contests. Just wanted to say thanks for what you did post – it really did make a difference to some people out here. Talula

Dear Talula,
Thanks so much for writing. Your post brought a big smile to my face. I appreciate your taking the time out of what I’m sure is a busy, busy schedule to send encouragement my way. I do hope to return to posting soon because I’ve been alerted to so many contests lately, it’s all I can do to keep from racing to this blog and posting them here. I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve taken to rest, but I must admit that people like you make it worthwhile to get back to work.
Thanks again, and best wishes for all you do!
