Hello Everyone,
I’m happy that you have navigated your way to this page, and that you are making use of these wonderful resources.

For the sake of time, I did not include a brief description of these web pages. I’m making their discovery YOUR JOB. But I do hope you’ll take the time to browse through these wonderful sites and see just what’s out there for writers.

For example, book-in-a-week.com listed above is a challenge website. Writers are encouraged to join this community for a small donation of $3. Once your membership is approved, you and your group members will set aside one week out of each month to write a complete book.

I have already made my donation, and am awaiting approval. I’m looking forward to this challenge. I have several book projects that I’ve been meaning to get to, and this high-standards challenge should kick-start me into motion.

In the meantime, there are some fine online dictionaries and search engines listed above. I’ll be adding more websites as the weeks go on. PLEASE don’t hesitate to use these resources. They’re there for you.

Best wishes and happy writing.

Rita

I just found your pages. Love an organized person! (not being one myself)
Do you know of markets/contests for the short–1,200-1300 word–story?

Hi Biellen,
Thanks for stopping by! Don’t forget to sign the guestbook next time you’re in town.

Hmmm…organized? I never thought of myself as organized, but thanks, I’ll quickly accept that compliment. :-)

As for markets, it really depends on what you write. For example, WOW (Women on Writing) is running a 1,200 word max contest that deadlines on November 30. Lee & Low (for children) is running a contest that deadlines on October 31, and the word max is 1,500. Writer’s Digest is running a “Show Us Your Shorts” contest that deadlines on December 3, and the word max is 1,500.

There are a host of contests and challenges listed on the site, so I’m sure you’ll find something. In the meantime, I’m really glad you posed this question. Within the next week or so, I’ll add a new category: 2,000 words or less. That way, writers can access these short-short contests much faster. Can’t do it any sooner, though, because I’ll be taking the “Book-in-A-Week” challenge starting Monday Sept. 10.

By the way, what do you write? What genre? For what age(s)? I have a nonfiction written and pictorial history that will hit the shelves this December, but in my heart I’m a children’s book writer. Right now I’m working on a nonfiction graphic novel series for the MG’s (middle grades).

I have access to info on several genres that might be of interest to you, but first I need to know where your focus is.

Best wishes and happy writing!

Rita

I do not really write enough to categorize beyond “fiction”. It’s the sound of words in my mind that I love, and I would write poetry, but can’t stand to read the stuff. Fantasy is a fair compromise.

Hi Biellen,
Fantasy it is! Check out the Crescent Moon call for manuscripts on this site. Scroll up to “Search,” then type “Crescent Moon.” Their current all-call deadlines on November 15, 2007.

Best wishes!

Rita
